Twin Monasteries

14 August 2020

The monastery in Węgrów, founded by Jan Dobrogost Krasiński, was designed, built and decorated by artists of King Jan III Sobieski's court: Tylman of Gamaren, Carl Cerroni, Michelangelo Palloni - in the years 1693-1715. The complex was built for the Observant Franciscan friars who had served there until 1864. They were banished by the invader due to their active involvement in independence activities. After World War II, the monastery buildings comprised, inter alia, warehouses, which were occupied by the court and by the dairy. On July 25, 1994, a parish was established at the monastery. Currently, since August 2019, revitalization works have been carried out in the monastery and they will have ended by July next year. Works are implemented under the Cross-border Cooperation Programme Poland-Belarus-Ukraine 2014–2020, and were co-financed by the European Union, the National Institute of Freedom - Center for Civil Society Development, Poviat Starosty in Węgrów and by the Town of Węgrów. After the works are completed, the Center for the Dialogue of Cultures will be established in the monastery, where educational, cultural and scientific events will be organized, as well as activities aimed at building international bonds and relations. We would like to thank Tomasz Sobisz for voluntary recording and editing of the film!
